Global Health and the Environment

Winter 2008 Global Health and the Environgment PC Students
Program Date
Sun. July 26 - Sat. Aug. 1, 2009

Issues: Global warming, avian flu and other pandemics, world population and famine.

Planet earth is a delicate ecosystem. Carbon emissions from combustion of fossil fuels have interrupted the natural cooling of the earth causing drought, raging storms, and failures of food crops. Avian flu is spreading and virulent strains of tuberculosis and other diseases are emerging posing unchecked threats to world health. Population continues to accelerate outstripping the ability of the land to produce enough food.

In Global Health & the Environment, you¡¦ll be briefed by some of the brightest authorities on the impact of these and related issues. You will hear from the same scientists and economists who advise members of the President's Cabinet, Congress, heads of government agencies, and international corporations.

You and members of your working group will wrestle with contradicting facts and opinions as you draft a policy statement on the issue that concerns you most. You will present and defend your findings at a mock summit on Global Health and the Environment. You will learn to think globally and act locally as you list in your Civic Action Plan steps you can take at home to improve the health and environment of your community.
